Why do we fall in love with a house?
We would perhaps all buy a pair of shoes on impulse, but when it comes to buying a home it’s such a huge financial commitment it’s all about calm deliberate focus right? You might be surprised.
Most analysis of buying seems to point to 3 main factors; location being a huge driver in choice, then price and then garden. But beyond those big influences what actually is going on when we view a property and start to imagine it as our home?
The answer partly lies in our subconscious; the layout, sounds, smells and colours can play a part, subliminally reminding us of a home or place we have happy memories off, the opposite can also apply where a property ticks your wish list but just doesn’t “feel” right.
Then there’s the conscious psychological part of buying – aspiration – what do we want to become? What house provides that for us? Once the emotional “hook” kicks in it can be so powerful – just like falling in love, so like assessing a relationship be careful to assess your dream home with logic too, go back to that tick list and make sure you don’t block out the bits that don’t work. Loving a house is so important so it feels right for you but make sure it is the house that meets your practical needs too -
