Fire and Smoke Alarms - Changes to the law

Posted by HSPC on Wednesday, 21 October 2020

The Scottish Government have announced new legislation which will change the fire and smoke alarm regulations for households.  From February 2021, all households will be responsible for ensuring the following fire and smoke alarm standards:

  • a smoke alarm in the living room and in circulation spaces such as hallways and landings
  • a heat alarm in every kitchen
  • all alarms ceiling mounted and interlinked
  • a carbon monoxide alarm where there are fixed combustion appliances such as boilers and wood burners

Due to public pressure, the Scottish Government are expected to announce a delay until February 2022.  These are the standards which are currently applicable to privately rented properties and new builds but will be rolled out to all Scottish homes next year.
